Making A Quilt Coat: Part Two

Image
Welcome to the second installment of my quilt coat journey. After making my muslin coat that was detailed in Part One, I set out on my mission to make a beautiful, unique, and detailed quilt coat that I pieced together and quilted myself.  As you may recall, my first quilt coat was made from a pre-quilted bedspread, so it was important to me to free-motion this pieced coat myself. I’ve been dabbling in free motion quilting over the past couple years and I really only free motion quilt my quilts now.  I recently got a new sewing machine! I had been sewing on a Pfaff Creative 2134 for years. I purchased it used from Craig’s List for $400. It was a great machine and had some cool features but it was beginning to show its age even after I had it serviced and repaired. My Pfaff was great for free motion, but I couldn’t find a free motion ruler foot for it. The ruler foot has a taller lip and is circular so that the edges are all equally 1/4” from the needle. This helps with consistency when

If you’ve been on Instagram lately you’ve seen that quilted coats and jackets are all the rage among quilters and sewists. Sewing, Painting, and Baking, Oh My! Hi!  My name is Melissa.  Welcome!  I am a lawyer by day and a quilter by night [and weekend].  I live in the Raleigh area in North Carolina with my husband and children.  I started this blog to share about my sewing, quilting, and crafting. My grandmother was an avid seamstress and quilter, but she passed away far too young after a courageous battle with breast cancer.  Sadly, she is not here to see how my creativity has blossomed (if I do say so myself) but I know she would be so proud. I learned to sew and quilt five years ago.  My best friend is an experience sewist who had years of quilting experience under her belt when she taught me.   I wanted to hand-make a quilt for my work mentor at the law firm where I started my career when she was expecting her second child.  I chose a gorgeous charm pack (Fragmental) designed by someone who would eventually become a huge influence for my work, Angela Walters, but I had no idea at the time.  My bestie
